I do enjoy appreciating a song and then finding out that the concept behind its creation is something I can relate to – such is the case with the album that today’s song comes from.
Released a last month and returning after a two year break, Pietro Santangelo (formerly Nu Genea sax player) and his PS5 ensemble issued a 10-track offering entitled, Echologia. Released via Italian label, Hyperjazz Records, I am working my way though the album as I type. It’s a jazzy, dynamic and wholly rhythmic affair, drawing inspiration (as described on their Bandcamp page) …”from the idea of natural biodiversity as an expression of contamination, coexistence and balance. In the same way as the biological agents contribute to the life of a certain ecosystem, seemingly distant musical languages act as elements of balance in a fertile and blooming musical system.

Following in the sax-driven footsteps of their 2021 record, Unconscious Collective, the style in which this sound unfolds, “moves naturally along an imaginary line, highlighting the ancestral connection between Africa and the Mediterranean Sea…” Add to the mix some deep dub textures (a tribute “to the earlier Jamaican dub masters with a strong use of vintage echoes in the mixing phase…”) and what we have is this marvellous sound!
The subtle fusion of each multi-textural layer element merges together wonderfully and it’s very easy to absorb the coexistence and balance theme which transfers through this music perfectly. The sinuous delights of Scalinatella introduced me to this outfit which, with its striking flecks of Ethiojazz scattered throughout, offers up a feast of mesmerising goodness!
