SONG OF THE DAY Fake Turins – Afterwards

From the thousands of artists that entered Glastonbury’s free Emerging Talent Competition 2019, the 90 acts for the long-list have yesterday been announced!

These acts were picked by a judging panel made up of 30 of the UK’s best online music writers and from this list only eight artists will compete in a live final.  Each of the bloggers have chosen their favourite three acts, from which Kid Kapachi also appeared in Bristol In Stereo’s shortlist – see my posts on this band here)

Another band that made it to this long-list is post-punk disco funk collective, Fake Turins.  There isn’t too much out there about this emerging band at present so I contacted them to discover and extract more!  Formed by Dominic Rose from the fallout of many different London bands, Fake Turins consists of 8-10 members, with a much larger collective of rotating faces that play as a when depending on the gig.  Detailing the dynamics, Dominic explains how “we’ve played 3 person set-ups with just violin, drum machines & vocals all the way up to the full 10 piece band – though there is about 15 of us gravitating around it.”

Drawing influences form the late 1970’s New York punk scene, the band’s sound adapts the “cacophony of sound & tension of each live set that held everything at the edge,” incorporating this energy into their creations.  Artists like James Chance & the Contortions and Talking Heads are at the core of their music, alongside other influences like Ought, Preoccupations, Protomartyr and Suuns.  At the heart of writing for the band, Dominic also explained how he uses poetry as his expression to search for meaning, the music translating his findings as it “focuses mostly on themes of morality, sense of self & other existential questions that you find in an intricate global world”

First track Afterwards is a groove-laden romp led by the ever-so-charismatic vocals of Dominic Rose.  Distinctly catchy and oozing that David Byrne feel, this song is a fantastic listen and an even better watch!!..Lucky for us Fake Turins have uploaded a live performance which I highly recommend you check out below!
