It’s been just over four years ago that I was first struck by the charms of Brighton’s finest psych outfit, the Strange Cages. Ever since then it has been a pleasure watching them grow and develop as they fine-tune their their raw garage-punk sound.
Years after emerging their long-awaited debut album, Pop Therapy, finally dropped last week and with Friday 13th as their release date you have to ask if this was just a coincidence for their (sometimes) sinister sounds to be unleashed…after all this is a band that once declared: “We love music that’s primal and menacing, anything twisted with a touch of evil…..”
Speaking about the record, the band explained: “We’ve collaborated with our close companions Acid Box Promotions for the release. All our love and fear from the past 5 years has gone in to this record and we can’t wait for you to get your bony fingers on it.”
The record features their 2015 corker, Desert (which I covered in May 2015) as well as nine other little beauties I am currently working my way through. Opening track Acid Rain opens is the perfect way to kick off the album and as it creeps in like a menacing shadow you can almost feel that prowling bass crawling up your spine as cutting vocals snarl, “I’ve got a feeling that there’s something wrong with my head/ You don’t wanna get wet if you,re walking through the acid rain.” It’s got that Fat White Family Touch The Leather swagger about it and I love the way this band always have a touch of the wicked about them, but I guess they don’t call themselves Strange for nothing!!!
