Influenced by the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, Hendrix and Frank Zappa, Kaleidoscope were a psych rock band that emerged in 1967. Originating in San juan, Puerto Rico, this band of teenagers consisted of Frank Tirado (vocals and bass), Orly Vázquez (electric guitar), Pedrín García (electric guitar) and Rafael Cruz and Julio on drums and organ.
Their raw sound was recorded with very little production control or any proper management, but this was part of their charm. They operated with an organic feel, fuelled only by teenage angst, heartbreaks and fantasies.
In 1967 they recorded their one and only self-titled album, laid down in Fabiola Studios in the Dominican Republic. This record wasn’t released until two years later and was put out on the Mexican label, Orfeón. I only stumbled upon Let Me Try earlier today, but was instantly charmed by its heavy, fuzzed-out, no-frills feel…there’s nothing like a bit of anguished brooding on a Friday evening! Check it out above.
