SONG OF THE DAY Kingdom of Kaffa – Dawa Ya moto ni moto

“Pure east African grooves. Heavy drums, vibrating flute on one side, a dirty organ on the other…”

This welcomed recommendation found me today and I have to say I’m rather chuffed to have been pointed in the direction of this very cool music – thank you !!!

With only a series of very nifty 45’s released to date (I think this band have been about since 2017) Kindom of Kaffa make light work of everything funky! Inspired by East African and Ethio-funk, this project have been issuing their sounds through Swiss label, That’s Why Records.

The label itself is made up of a conglomerate of musicians, all of whom run a full analog studio with an 8-track recording system – thus providing the perfect balance for these authentic sounds.

Dawa Ya moto ni moto was the first single released by the Kindom of Kaffa in 2017 and a rough translation from Swahili transcribes the title as “the fire (of hell)” or “fire medicine is hot“.  And hot this is! Driven by a gloriously intrepid flute melody, chanting vocals embellish the groove, whilst drums exuberantly run rampage all over the mix; it’s proper satisfying! Listen above and if you like what you hear, I strongly recommend you check out more on the band’s page here!
