SONG OF THE DAY Los Destellos – Onsta La Yerbita

Today I’ve been trying to find some sunshine to chase away the grottiness of this grey day and I got lucky! Not only have I found some sonic sunbeams in this lush Latino instrumental, but I’ve also found a whole lot of groove !

Onsta La Yerbita was a song released in 1971 on an album entitled Constelación.  Written and performed by Peruvian group Los Destellos, the band were an instrumental funk, soul group who specialised in all things Cumbia/Psychedelic/ Calypso! The band formed in the Lima district of Rímac, Peru in 1966 and over the years saw more than 90 musician pass through.  Led by Enrique Delgado, Los Destellos truly defined the sound of Peruvian cumbia with the incorporation of diverse influences and the use of electric guitars.

Los Destellos repertoire spanned over an impressive 30 years with numerous albums released over that period! I’ve so much to delve into!   I’ve also found a copy of today’s song on a magic mix album entitled “Peru Bravo: Funk, Soul & Psych from Peru’s Radical Decade” and oh my, what a nice listen! Compiled by Tigers Milk Records in 2014, this is sounding rather lovely so far – so much so I’ve just ordered myself a copy! Listen above and check out this comp for yourself here.
