Produced by Joe Meek and released in 1964, Little Baby has been described by many as one of Meek’s finest moments…but there are many and I’ve only really just learning about the many, many wonders of Meek!!
I’d saved this track in a playlist ages ago, but on a shuffle trip last night it came on and reignited the desire to share! This little ear worm has been on repeat in my head all day!
The Blue Rondos were a garage-rock band from North London – Islington to be exact. This young group were mostly seventeen years old and consisted of Mickey Stubbs (vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica), Roger Hall (lead guitar), Billy Pitt-Jones (bass), Ray Sheene (drums) and John Tobin (keyboards). They emerged in the mid-sixties and cut their mainly self-penned songs at the legendary ‘304 Holloway Road” Music studios of ”Recording Maestro” and sound engineer/producer Joe Meek (R.G.M.Sound). Sadly, only two singles were ever released and neither of these charted (surprisingly)!!
Released on Pye Records, Little Baby (b/w Baby I Go For You), was the first of these two little diamonds to be released. I love the way the track starts; it’s subtle, yet very detectable haunted edge. The melody is buoyant and you can hear all those Roy Orbison comparisons in the vocals, but its those little dark intervals that sets this song apart and keeps its burrowing in my ears! Check it out above.
