SONG OF THE DAY Free Kitten – Never Gonna Sleep

This is so savage in all the best possible ways!! What I like about today’s song is that its on of those you can’t pinpoint! It sounds neither old or new and I really relish that tasty monster rhythm!! It’s a beast!

For all those not familiar with noise/indie rock outfit, Free Kitten (that included me until today), this song comes from their 1997 album, Sentimental Education. Originally formed by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore’s Julie Cafritz in 1992, the band also eventually consisted of Yoshimi from Boredoms on drums (who joined in 1993) and Pavement’s Mark Ibold on bass (who joined in 1994). The group halted in 1997 but were reactivated in 2007, without Mark Ibold.  Four albums were released between 1992-2008, with an array of 7″/EP releases between 1992-1997.

Never Gonna Sleep is taken from Free Kitten’s second album, Sentimental Education, which was released in 1997 on Portland’s Kill Rock Stars label.  The album is named after the novel by French novelist Gustave Flaubert and featured a collaboration with DJ Spooky and a cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s Teenie Weenie Boppie.  Never Gonna Sleep is the only track I like though! It definitely stands out from the rest of the album! Check it out above.
