It’s weird how music always seems to be an ‘all or nothing’ flow when it comes to discovering new things, but I often find this is the case. Saving music in so many places, its hard to keep up with myself sometimes, but today’s little beauty was tucked away in a list I’d made a while back!
The Numero Groups first ever volume in their terrific Eccentric Soul Series was an album entitled “Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label”. Issued in 2008 (listen to it in its entirety below), the compilation traces the history of a label called Capital City Soul – or Capsoul as it was often shortened and referred to! Sadly a short-lived venture, the Columbus, Ohio label’s history spanned only five years throughout the 1970’s. Founded by William Rogers Moss, a.k.a Bill Moss, the label released just a dozen 45’s and one highly sought after LP, but with funds a struggling resource, it was hard to keep going! Bill Moss was himself a singer and DJ’d at WVKO in Columbus.
In 1969 he released his first single, a civil rights meditation entitled Sock It To ‘Em Soul Brother, whichs was closely followed by today’s little dream, Number One. What I love about this song is that it really does have something about it that makes it stand out. After ploughing through what felt like an ocean of music tonight, I played this and it all fell into place! It’s a lovely track with a lovely familiar melody and the percussion is lush!! I really enjoy the sound of Moss’s voice too! Check it out above and enjoy!
