SONG(S) OF THE DAY The Sorcerers AND The Outer World Jazz Ensemble

I truly couldn’t choose between two songs today so you, you lucky listeners, are going to get not one but TWO songs of the day!! Wohoo!!

Released together on a brand new double A-side single issued by UK’s wonderful ATA Records, The Sorcerers (definitely no stranger to the LP Blog – see HERE for more) are accompanied newcomers, The Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble. This is to be the debut release for the aptly named Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble and I am happy to declare that both tracks are an absolute feast for the ears!!

Exit Athens marks the start of a new era for The Sorcerers who, continuing their investigations of Ethio-Jazz and 60s and 70s European library music, have concocted another mysterious delight. The group is now formed around Joost Hendrickx (Kefaya, Shatner’s Bassoon, Abstract Orchestra), Richard Ormrod (saxes, flute & keys) and ATA label head, bassist Neil Innes. Exit Athens features a driving funk melody, combined with exotic percussion, vintage keyboards, and the classic Addis Ababa combination of sounds. Channelling the maximal, saturated aesthetic of 70s exploitation thrillers, The Sorcerers hope this sound will have you on the “edge of your seat throughout”!

On the AA side, Beg, Borrow, Play marks the debut of The Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble. The first in an ongoing series of 45s and LP issues, each Outer Worlds release will feature the immaculate grooves of the hard-working, unsung sidemen of the Leeds Funk, Latin and Ethio/Afrobeat scenes. The Outer Worlds series was conceived to feature visiting soloists who have made a beeline to ATA in search of a specific setting for their material.

Beg, Borrow, Play opens the release with ATA’s Chip Wickham on baritone sax, delivering a tasty slice of jazz exotica. This free-flowing dream unfolds with the addition of a vibrant and sometimes slinky horn section, accompanied by a sinuous flute melody; all of which flow and buzz together like a juicy fat bee high on the nectar of the most exotic of gardens!

This offering is alive with vibrant sounds!! I hope now you can see why it was impossible to choose just one song from this!!? I hope you enjoy and if, like me, you feel compelled to get yourself a copy, you can do that for a very modest price here!!
