Kevin Morby always makes me feel like I’ve come home. His voice offers a structure of solace and his lyrics fill the room with soft embraces. When you listen to Kevin Morby, one thing you can always bank on is the calmness he instils.
Following last years Oh my God album, Kevin Morby has just announced brand new record, Sundowner. Due on 16th October via Dead Oceans Morby has explained the creative process behind his new offering and explained how, “I wrote the entire album wearing headphones, hunched over the 424, letting my voice and guitar pass through the machine, getting lost in the warmth of the tape as if another version of myself was living on the inside, singing back at me. I was mesmerized by the magic of the four track not only as a recording device, but also an instrument, and considered it my songwriting partner throughout the whole process.”
“It is a depiction of isolation,” he continues. “Of the past. Of an uncertain future. Of provisions. Of an omen. Of a dead deer. Of an icon. Of a Los Angeles themed hotel in rural Kansas. Of billowing campfires, a mermaid and a highway lined in rabbit fur. It is a depiction of the nervous feeling that comes with the sky’s proud announcement that another day will be soon coming to a close as the pink light recedes and the street lamps and house lights suddenly click on.”
“A mermaid and a highway lined in rabbit fur”!!! I love that description and I’ve often watched the sun sinking into a hungry horizon as a tinge of sadness strikes, noting that this day has gone and will pass no more. I like how he captures that feeling: “depiction of the nervous feeling that comes with the sky’s proud announcement that another day will soon be coming to a close” It makes you stop and think and brings you into the moment which I wholly endorse, I spend too much time anywhere but ‘here and now’ all too often!
Kevin Morby shared the album’s first single, Campfire, a few days ago and what a little scorcher it is. A homely melody provides a mellow backdrop for wistful lyrics to unfurl as Morby croons, “There’s a campfire in side my soul and it billows….” Liston above, pre-order the album here and check out the accompanying video below.
Along with the album, Kevin Morby has announced a “virtual tour” on the Noon Chorus platform. Starting on September 10th, Morby will perform one album from his discography every Thursday, working in chronological order until he gets to an October 15th performance of Sundowner. Morby was set to tour the United States this spring in support of his 2019 LP Oh My God before the coronavirus pandemic effectively shut down the touring industry.
