SONG OF THE DAY Wau Wau Collectif – Mouhamodou Lo and His Children

There are all different species of fish swimming around, but together they make the ocean.” (Arouna Kane)

This curious little amble of sunshine is the most delightful thing; a floaty dream of sonic rainbows that simply makes you feel really good……

Inspired by his travels, to the point of assembling a team of musicians from Senegal and Sweden, Swedish musician Karl Jonas Winqvist released his new album earlier this year!

His journey of sonic discovery began in in 2018, when he visited Toubab Dialaw in Senegal, a small fishing village that has become the centre of Senegal’s bohemian art scene. Over the course of a few weeks Winqvist met local musicians, percussionists, poets and beatmakers who met to plan out ideas in free improvisations. Winqvist returned to Sweden, continuing to exchange recordings through WhatsApp with Arouna Kane, the Senegal-based collaborator and studio engineer with whom the collective recorded back in March 2018.

With more than 20 artists from Senegal and Sweden, Yaral Sa Doom revolves around education (the title being a Wolof expression for “educating young people”). The songs directly addresses the social problems of contemporary Senegal, including education and immigration. “Today you must educate children with an instrument and art … when you teach them an instrument you teach them to use their spirit,” explains Djiby Ly, one of the members of the group.  The record transcends borders, taking inspiration from West African traditions, Sufi songs of praise, spiritual jazz and dub rhythms…resulting in this unique mix!

Featured track, Mouhamodou Lo and His Childrenintroduced me to this intriguing sound recently.  It’s not quite like anything I’ve ever heard and yet feels really familiar.

Check it out above and listen/purchase the rest of the album (released via Sahel Sounds) from here.
