Alfredito Levy, also known as, Alan Levy, celebrated a career that spanned over a good couple of decades (from what I can gather) and yet its been a little tricky to find out who he was and what took him into music?
Active in the 1950’s and 1960’s, Alfredito Levy was a percussionist and Jewish bandleader known for his mambo/boogaloo/jazz compositions. Active in New York, he was accompanied by his jazz orchestra and together the band played alongside many of the greats of the NYC Latin Music scene, including Tito Puente and Willie Bobo. He formed his own mambo outfit in the mid 50s and they issued records for Rainbow Records, Tico Records and Ronnex Records.
Some of his earliest releases date back to 1953, with the rock and roll blaze, Honeydipper Mambo being one of his earliest 45’s. Turkish Delight came about a year later which, with its hefty horn section and contrasting supple chime melody, makes for a very striking instrumental! The rhythm section flurries with crisp precision and the varied percussive elements fills the tune with power! This 45 was issued on Rainbow Records with the sweet delights of Sugar Cane Mambo on the b-side! Enjoy
