Though Spitting Image may have been around for over ten years, they are a new discovery for the LP Blog. Their chaotic buzz and sultry riffs are causing quite a stir today though and I like the energy in their sound. It’s pretty raw and untamed.
Originally a band who were initially only well-known to those who resided in their vicinity (that being Reno, Nevada), Spitting Image were recently discovered by fellow Reno-residents Slovenly Recordings. Known for promoting and signing the “grimiest punk sounds from every corner of the globe”, the label issued the band’s debut album, Full Sun, earlier this year.
Compared to the likes of Protomartyr, The Men and Gun Outfitthen their desert-drenched music draws upon influences from the likes of The Men, Gun Outfit, 80’s Wave and early Siouxie and The Banshees. What separates Spitting Image from their contemporaries, however, is the sound of the desert—spacious, sweltering, and shimmering. This, by their own admission, defines their own sonic identity!
What also drives their creative engines are intriguing “fascinations with repetition, patterns, transposing things and ideas into new contexts.” Charged with an overflowing and undeniably wonderfully unhinged edginess, this band capture the pure essence of post-punk mayhem, whilst adding their own splashes of sun-tinged textures and colours.
Taken from their recent offering, Devils Bloom feels so hot you could easily believe it was concocted in the sweltering belly of the underworld. As lively as a box of frogs on a trampoline, its ravenous and hungry and I’m really enjoying the frenzy of this moment! Enjoy!
