SONG OF THE DAY Roger Damawuzan -Xede Nge

R-4486317-1372396532-3392It certainly didn’t take long for this little beauty to wrap me up in its spell and completely bewitch me…only a few seconds, in fact!!

Born in 1952, Togolese singer-songwriter and musician, Roger Damawuzan is something of a legend and known as one of the most popular singers in Africa!

Also known as the ‘James Brown of Lomé” Roger is widely considered to be one of the most influential figures of the 1970’s African funk scene! Through his music he introduced traditional Togolese rhythms (such as Gazo, Akpesse and Kamou) and spent much of his musical career in the band, Les As Du Bénin.

His first 45, Xede Nge b/w Wait For Me, is known as a holy grail for diggers all around the world, fetching up-to and (sometimes) beyond £200 for a copy – a discovery that somewhat hampers my plans to purchase a copy now, unfortunately, but at least I can listen to it on here!!!

If you check out Wait For Me below, you will see why he was likened to James Brown! This track is as funky as!!!  For me, though, my ears are definitely more drawn to the contrasting charm of the understated flipside, Xede Nge, which is a far more subdued and enchanting affair!

Xede Nge, was issued on a French label called Akue, but I’m not too sure on a release date, so if anybody knows?? ..Enjoy.
